Total Letdown

July 8, 2011

He didn’t show, dang it.

All dressed up and no one to be the plantiff.

It wasn’t a big surprise, but it was a little disappointing. We’ve kept quiet about the whole thing because it seemed the wisest course of action, but here’s the scoop:

At the end of May, our neighbor (a sheriff’s deputy) knocked on our door and said, “I never thought I’d be giving you one of these” and handed us the court summons. “I don’t need to know the details of your case, but this guy’s from Ohio? Does he know that he needs to show up for this? Anyway, make sure you’re there, and be certain you’ve dotted your i’s and crossed your t’s.” We assured him that we had all of our letters in order.

Then began the work on The Binder. All my organizational skills (honed during months of putting accreditation files together for work) swung into full gear. Assembling this was no trouble at all for me, because if there’s one thing I love more than napping, it is Being Right.

Orange for supporting evidence, Green for directly related to the case.

Bind, bind, bind.
This thing is indexed, color-coded and cross-referenced. Lloyd put together his stuff, too, but his doesn’t have stickers. Stickers are key.

We assembled at the courthouse with our Star Witness, Rebecca, and Brad and Beth as onlookers. (You can’t have a trial without onlookers.) We waited and waited for fifteen whole minutes, chit-chatting with Lisa (the stenographer and mom of a former preschooler) and the bailiff (a nice guy who complemented my binder). The judge ruled in our favor and we left.

So, there’s that.

Hey, here’s a fun activity: Go to eBay and click on ‘Community’ in the top right corner. Search for Samsung_repair. Once you get to that account, look at all the feedback, especially through November of 2010. Do you see all those people who left feedback after purchasing a ‘Set of Apple iPod Tools’? Do you see how some of them are listed more than once and left identical feedback? Fishy, eh? Also, if you search for ‘darryldoj’, a buyer who left feedback for samsung_repair on December 28, 2010 and November 5, 2010, leaving multiple, identical feedback replies seems to be this person’s job.

I am completely losing faith in eBay.

    Congratulations! Nice binder.

“Does he know that he needs to show up for this?” Wouldn’t a law student know this?

  3. Karla Said on:

I’m not surprised he didn’t show, but I am disappointed. All my questions are unanswered. Unless he’s like to come on here and explain… He knows the url.

On the bright side, he can no longer threaten to sue you; he’s already tried to do that!

And I agree with Mary Ellen; it’s a beautiful binder. I hope you put it in a special place in your house.

It was nice to get out of there early and enjoy a delicious Second Breakfast.

I’m surprised eBay is so easy to tinker with. 🙁

You look like such a lovely couple. (And you are.) Too bad John Harlan won’t get the chance to meet you in person. He just blew his one chance.

  6. Peggy Said on:

Well, I suppose it’s too risky for a blood-sucker to attend a daylight trial!

  7. Jill Said on:

Love your skirt, Lauren. 😉 (I’m wearing my black one, at the moment.) And your belt! Look at you! Now I have to try one!

Does anyone else think that my belly makes that shirt look fat?

Well I’ve been quite frustrated by EBay recently. Thankfully they sent me a customer satisfaction survey today. OK, they asked for it!

    Dear EBay

My first attempt to purchase an item on EBay has been a little less than satisfactory.

I kindly request that you take the time to read my account.

I attempted to purchase an item from samsung_repair, run by John Harlan who has also traded on EBay under the following ID’s:

The item was 250839219250. I tried 4 or 5 times to make a payment via EBay and it would not go through when it got to the PayPal payment. John Harlan then sent me a email invoice from PayPal. I checked with PayPal and they confirmed that a seller is allowed to do this, however in the process John managed to avoid the transaction appearing on EBay.

After samsung_repair received the item I sent him (as a part exchange upgrade) he became an unregistered user.

Having not heard anything from John I was a little alarmed. I searched his ID and found this site:

I urge you to read this story about John. Including the recent update where John issued a court order against the authors and then failed to turn up for the hearing.

I am now a little concerned about my purchase with John.

I contact EBay and was assured it was being looked into. The very same day samsung_repair reappears as a registered user. BUT WAIT……he now has TRUSTED SELLER status!

According to your own standards a seller has to have 100 transactions. BUT WAIT, he only has 61 transactions. 31 of those transactions were for $0.05 and a further three transactions were less than $1. In some instances transactions for $0.05 were recorded at the same time by the same buyer for the same product.

I would like to suggest that EBay could perhaps be a little more vigilant in how a seller manages to boost his Feedback Score and perhaps be more vigilant in how you enforce your standards.

It would be very helpful if it was possible for a buyer to leave feedback for a seller that may have deliberately suspended his account by not paying his bill or if the item managed to evade being processed by EBay.

It would be very helpful if a seller on EBay was restricted to one ID.

It would be helpful if it was not possible for PayPal to issue an invoice via a seller that has managed to avoid the transaction being processed by EBay.

    Freaking awesome! Good job guys!!!

    That was disappointing, although unsurprising.

For some reason I expected a top hat and cloak/ waxed mustache sort of combo.

The SCREAM outfit would have been apropos !!

Sorry you guys had to go through that waste of time for this LOSER !!

      • Lloyd Said on:

I don’t know if I would call it a waste of time. If he threatens to sue someone else, we can send them the “How to Defend Yourself Against John Harlan Harassment” kit.

I too recently had a negative encounter w/ Samsung_repair on ebay. He/she purchased a $650 computer processor from me but never paid. He tried to send me a bogus payment through paypal (a hold was placed on the payment then eventually cancelled. I’m positive his intention was to try to get me to ship the item, then cancel the payment.
