The day started off poorly enough. You see, yesterday was a work day at school, and I spent 5 hours grading student videos of sometimes dubious quality (for which I will share a little of the blame). But I finished grading them, and that was nice. I don’t know why I mentioned that. It really doesn’t relate to the story at hand. I could have just said, “on my way home from school.”
On my way home from school I was listening to NPR, as I am wont to do, and they started in on YASATMPC (Yet Another Story About The Miraculous Plane Crash). Having heard enough of those already, I changed to another station. They were playing Sweet Caroline, so I had to leave it there and sing along. Then they played a Billy Joel song, so I kept right on singing. Then they said that I could see Billy Joel and Elton John at the Quest Center on May 21st.
Two years ago I had tickets to go see Billy Joel, but I got a heart failure, and couldn’t go. I got home and found out that tickets would go on sale in 16 hours.
16 hours later I decided that I didn’t want to buy floor seats 20 rows back. It turns out (a) $400 is alot of money, (b) I’d have to listen to Elton sing that stupid Princess Di song and (c) hello? heart failure. So the day started off poorly enough.
Lauren wanted to go to Lincoln. I didn’t. I thought I might get to stay at home and do little to nothing. Instead, we went to Lincoln and it turned into Lloyd’s Day Of Fun. At Lauren’s first stop, her store was out of business, but the game store across the street was moving and had games for 75% off. I bought some gifts, some games for my gamer friends and I to play, and some 4-way chess boards for school. Oh, and Lauren bought a game.
Second stop was the mall. They didn’t have what Lauren was looking for in the right size, but Yonkers had clothes for Lloyd for 75% off. Oh, and there was a huge used book sale. I bought a book for a fellow teacher and a few books for myself. Oh, and Lauren bought a book.
Next stop was lunch. I found out a few weeks ago that one of my 8th grader’s parents own a restaurant, We stopped by today. My food was really, really good. Lauren didn’t like hers very much.
Lauren tried a few more stores, but nothing came of it.

I just finished reading yesterday’s post and was getting ready to switch over to Deanne’s site, when this nice little post popped up. I get to be the first to comment, probably because Lloyd is not a morning person!
Beth says
Was that used book sale in the mall?
We have heard that T&R’s Garden is really quite good. Thanks for the recommendation. And not.
Now I want to go shopping. But that would probably not be a good idea.
Happy Day of Fun for Lloyd. Sorry about Lauren’s Day of Disappointments.
Brad says
I’m going to guess that the game Lauren got is The Princess of Florence. Wait.. “Princes”? Now I’m not so sure.
Charles says
Here’s the important question – any expansion sets for ‘Settlers’?
Lloyd says
Those are never on sale. But I did get Seafarers of Catan a while back. It adds islands and boats. We haven’t played it yet.
Brady G. says
Seafarers is a good time. Less “stuff” than Cities and Knights, but a good new deminsion to Settlers. I found a new expansion (“Traders and Barbarians”) the other day (didn’t buy – too expensive for the wallet at the moment).
Lloyd says
We just haven’t gotten around to trying it yet, and now we’ve got 3 new games to play. Princes of Florence is rated higher that Settlers at board game geeks. But that doesn’t mean we’ll like it. I returned Puerto Rico because it looked more complicated than I thought we wanted.
Deanne says
My mom always said it was as much fun for her to see her family get stuff they want/need as to get it for herself.
Do you feel like that when you plan a big shopping day and Lloyd gets most of the goodies?
Lauren says
Um, how do I answer that without looking like a jerk? Let me just say, “Lloyd’s mom would have had a lovely time.” 😉
Cousin Sam says
Is it “a heart failure” or “the heart failure”?
I’m guessing the Lauren game is the(a) Beer drinking/dog flatulence/palindrome* game.
*not endorsed by the Alaskan RNC
Lauren says
‘A‘ heart failure, like ‘a’ hangnail. Of course, it could have been ‘the’ heart failure, like ‘the’ cancer. Thank you, Forrest Gump.
Lloyd says
There was just the one.
Arron/Karla says
Speaking of heart failure, have you been back to the cardiologist like you’re supposed to? (insert stern look here)
Lloyd says
Um… No, but in my defense, I haven’t been back to a Billy Joel concert either.
Arron/Karla says
Neither has Arron, but he still goes to his neurosurgeon and neurologist every time he’s supposed to…
Lloyd says
At church this morning Beth brought up that by “Gamer Friends” I really meant everyone I know except Lauren and Deborah.
Charles says
That’s right! 🙂
Deborah says
That was me.
God says
I look forward to the next time you fly my dear Lloyd…the voice that only you will hear will be mine:
“Yes, let’s play a game?”
Lloyd's Mom says
Sounds like a fun day to me. Next time it’s Lauren’s turn to get the goodies.
