This year I’ll have more preschoolers than we have cubbies, so some prototypin’ had to be done. A few old shelves, a miter saw, and just a few muttered curses later – viola’!
Of course it won’t live in my entryway, but it doesn’t look bad there. The only thing I have to do is fix the rough, exposed ends of the top piece. They’re all raggedy particle board, and I don’t want to spend money on laminate tape. Any ideas?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the great ideas, everyone. This thing almost was turned into a collage of stickers, ribbon and gum! I had a stroke of luck, though. Down in the basement I seemed to recall that there was an end-cap thingie from when I bought a countertop for school. It never was used, and lo and behold – there it was! Good thing I didn’t clean my basement, Brad.
Snip snip, heat heat, apply apply. Just don’t look too closely.

It’s lovely! No ideas on the edges, but the shelf looks great!
Brad says
You could paint or stain the edges. Or just use polyurethane.

Dang. That’s not funny…

Carefully burn the edges, Yea! … or if time allows, carve a beautiful landscape in the edges by heating up any metal tool you have laying around …

A link from the Kentucky Department of Corrections? That’s a little weird, don’t you think?
Curt says
That is hilarious!! Peggy, do you shop there regularly? Wow they have a lot of products. and services? Hmmm….jail furniture. Who would buy mattresses or bedding from a correctional institute?
